There has never been a better time to market your appraisal business than right now. With thousands of appraisers leaving the business this year, there is a large gap of appraisal work that needs to be filled. The big questions are "Where is all the work going? and How do I get some?" I can tell you right now that any new business (outside of appraisal manament company work) is going to those appraisers that know how to market and have a presence on the internet.

First off, why have a site and who am I marketing to?

Easy questions with an easy answer. You need a website if you plan to market online for estate purposes, or to CPA's and Attorneys, etc... You could easily build a business around just this type of work with the right marketing.

Wait! I can hear it already. The groaning from all you appraisers that are saying "I tried that and it didn't work!" And you know what? I believe you because I had the same problem 2 years ago. I built what I thought was an amazing site. Lenders could order online, any messages on the site went immediately to my cell so I could respond without delay. I had people complimenting me on my site and even had A La Mode say it was one of the best sites they had seen. Wow, did I feel great! But reality set in quickly when I didn't get one order from my site. Not one!

What was the problem?

Nobody (meaning lenders and banks) knew I was there. I put up my site with about a million other sites online and expected them to somehow find me. I thought that because I had spent hours on the site and had great content that Google would find my site and reward me with page one, top rankings. I thought I deserved it!

What is the reality?

Even sites that don't have great or relevant content will rank higher than your site if you don't know how to market your site.

You have 2 options:

Hire someone experienced with Search Engine Optimization (SEO). That just

means they know how to get you to the top of search engines, like Google.

Learn how to market your business yourself.

My wife did this, and not only did she learn how to promote my business, now

she makes more than I do marketing other products online. If you are

Direct Marketing

Direct marketing is any marketing you do directly to a bank, lender, professional or consumer, where you are actively seeking them out for business. This can be through mailers, email, or physically walking into their offices.

Again, you can market to private lending institutions, such as banks that do their own financing, that are not backed by FannieMae or FreddieMac. This also includes seeking out CPA's and Attorneys for estate jobs.

A bulk of your work will probably come from appraisal management companies. There are lots of great ones out there that pay well and don't have a lot of restrictions. We have all heard or experienced the horror stories about them, but there are just as many that have very good reputations. Some people may have a great experience with one while someone else has a terrible experience with that same one.

Your best solution is to sign up with as many as possible and make your own decision.

Internet Marketing Info:

I wanted to include some information on marketing online for those of you who may be interested. This information can be used to market your own business or to market products online as a side business.

My wife's story:

After studying internet marketing for 2 years and spending thousands of dollars on "coaches" and programs that were supposed to help make money online she finally found 2 resources that showed her how to make money online that walked her through the process and gave her access to professionals that answered all her questions.

Within about 3 weeks of starting she was making about $200/mo on one product.

That may not sound like alot, but she was only working about 3 hours a day as we have 5 kids and we homeschool. It seems logical that we could repeat the process with more products and continue to make more, which is exactly what we did.

everything from clickbank products to a local business to a national business

located nearby.

Based on personal experience, I urge you to look further into Internet Marketing.

The other resource I recommend is a downloadable book called

One-Week Marketing. If you want or need someone to hold your hand, this is a

great resource. The lady who wrote this is named Potpiegirl and makes about

$150,000 each year. She sells her information through her ebook, but she is also

part of the forum mentioned above. She is wonderful about giving advise and is a

great resource.

I wasn't sure I believed it when my wife said what she wanted to do, but now I have seen the results and know that anyone can do it.
